Materials
What is Recette dinnerware made of?
Our plates and bowls are made from PLA enhanced with natural mineral fillers. Our utensils are made from stainless steel. Our placemats are made from silicone.
What is PLA? Why should I use it?
PLA, or polylactic acid, is a plant-based material usually made from corn starch or sugarcane through a fermentation process. Other source materials include cassava and sugar beet pulp. PLA is made from a recyclable and renewable resource and is biodegradable—using 65% less energy than producing conventional plastics, and generating 68% fewer greenhouse gasses. It is a safe, sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastic, melamine, or disposable dinnerware.
What is the difference between Recette and other children’s dinnerware brands?
Our PLA plates and bowls are free from harmful chemicals including BPA, phthalates and lead. It is made from plant-based, renewable, materials. Unlike silicone, it will not have a soapy taste from repeat use, and it is beautiful enough that adults will want to use it too! Unlike stainless steel plates, our dishes are microwave-safe to help simplify busy parents’ routines—and top-rack dishwasher-safe, too. Our utensils are made from stainless steel, which is nontoxic, easy to clean, dishwasher-safe, and recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Our silicone placemats can be easily wiped clean.
What safety certifications does Recette comply with?
A safe alternative to conventional toxic materials used for children’s dinnerware, Recette plates and bowls are plant-based and reusable. Recette's plates, bowls, and utensils comply with FDA Food-Safe Standards, CPSIA, and CPSC regulations. Believe it or not, most of the “bamboo” children’s dinnerware products sold in the U.S. are coated with melamine, and are banned for food contact in the EU. Those products can release melamine and formaldehyde and are considered harmful in excessive amounts. In fact, children’s bamboo plates have been recalled in the past due to risk of lead and formaldehyde exposure. To learn more see here.
Why is PLA better for the planet?
PLA is made from a renewable resource and is biodegradable under industrial compost conditions. PLA uses 65% less energy than producing conventional plastics, and generates 68% fewer greenhouse gasses.
Usage & Care
Will my plates break if my child drops or throws one?
PLA can withstand small falls, but may crack from drops of greater than 3 feet. The product is still safe to use with cracks as it is plant-based and not mixed with toxic materials such as melamine like many other brands. We hope that one day plant-based, non-toxic materials can be even more durable!
How do I care for my Recette dinnerware?
We recommend that you clean your dinnerware before first use. Recette is dishwasher-safe and can withstand microwave heat up to 105 deg C / 220 deg F. The top dishwasher rack is recommended as it is farther from heating elements, and we recommend not using the heated dry feature if your dishwasher has one.
Because PLA is made from plants, the material may become scratched by sharp surfaces, so we recommend using a soft sponge for washing, and cutting on a cutting board or ceramic plate instead of directly on the plate’s surface.
